WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UVA AND UVB RAYS?
UVA and UVB rays are ultraviolet radiation (part of the light spectrum) that comes from the sun. Ultraviolet rays are shorter than visible light, which is why you can’t see them with your naked eye.
UVB rays hit your skin’s surface and can turn you lobster-red. Ouch! UVA rays have longer wavelengths than UVB and can penetrate deeper into your skin, causing aging and long-term damage. Both UVA and UVB rays can cause skin cancer. Double ouch!
HOW CAN I PROTECT MYSELF FROM THE SUN’S HARMFUL RAYS?
Sunscreen doesn’t have a seasonal preference: Summer, Fall, Winter, Spring wear sunscreen year round.
Listen and look: Don’t neglect your ears, eyes, lips, and nose. These facial areas are often overlooked and need coverage, too. Wraparound UV-blocking
Watch out for the trucker’s arm! Your left arm often rests on the door ledge by the window when you drive. Arm yourself with sunscreen.
HOW TO PROTECT YOUR CHILD
Be sure your child wears a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. When outdoors for an extended time, they should use a water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN UVA AND UVB RAYS?
UVA is long wavelength (320-400 nm) UV and accounts for up to 95 percent of the solar UV radiation reaching the Earth’s surface, according to a press release from The Skin Cancer Foundation called “Shining Light on Ultraviolet Radiation”. It can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin and has for years been thought to play a major part in skin aging and wrinkling. Importantly, recent studies strongly suggest that it may also initiate and exacerbate the development of skin cancers. UVA rays are present during all daylight hours and throughout the winter months. Although UVA rays are less intense than short wavelengths, (UVB) they are present all year round and depending upon the time of the year, can be 30 to 50 times more prevalent than UVB rays. Furthermore, UVA radiation can penetrate glass and clouds. Thus we are exposed to large doses of UVA throughout our lifetime. UVB is the middle range of UV with wavelengths between 290-320 nm. It is very biologically active and is responsible for burning, tanning, acceleration of skin aging and plays a very key role in the development of skin cancer. The intensity of UVB varies by season, location and time of day. The most significant amount of UVB hits the U.S. between 10am and 4pm between April and October. UVB rays penetrate glass.
MY EVERY DAY FACE LOTION HAS SPF IN IT. IS IT SAFE TO JUST
USE THIS BEFORE I GO TO THE BEACH?
Everyday face lotions with SPF are great for your skin and provide protection against incidental sun exposure. For a day in the sun, look for a sunscreen with UVA & UVB protection and water resistant protection. When used as directed, these products will provide broad-spectrum protection and will also protect you if you are going to be in and out of the water. If you’re going to be active, they will not “sweat off” your body.
WHAT IS SPF?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. This is a multiplier that tells you how much longer you can remain in the sun without a burn when wearing a sunscreen. For instance, if you can usually tolerate the sun for 10 minutes without a burn, an SPF 15 will provide you with 15 times that, or 150 minutes of protection without burning.
HOW DO I KNOW WHAT SPF I NEED?
You need to consider a number of factors. How long will you be out in the sun? What is the UV Index for the day? What time of the day will you be out and what activity will you be doing? And, most importantly, what is your skin type? Use the Banana Boat® SPF Guide to find out what products are right for you. If I apply a lotion with an SPF 8 and then put an SPF 15 on top of it, does that mean that I’m actually wearing an SPF 23? SPF numbers don’t add up the way you might think. Using an SPF 8 and SPF 15 together won’t allow you to remain in the sun 23 times longer than without protection. It’s not an additive. You need to determine how long you’ll be in the sun, along with your skin type, and choose the appropriate SPF level for you.
I’VE HEARD THAT YOU DON’T NEED MORE THAN SPF 15.
IS THAT TRUE?
For fair and very fair-skinned people, an SPF 15, and in many instances an SPF 30, does not provide enough protection on a very sunny day in the summer, especially in southern portions of the U.S.; and remember, the longer you are in the sun, the higher SPF level you need. Don’t forget to bring the sunscreen with you on all-day outdoor activities so that you can reapply.
WHY DO SOME PEOPLE TAN AND OTHERS BURN?
The reaction of our skin to sun, either burning or tanning, is based on genetics, we inherit our ability to tan or burn. In general, fair-skinned people often burn and are rarely able to tan. DO I NEED TO TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IN THE SUN IF I’M
Photosensitization, an increased sensitivity to sun exposure, is a possible side effect of certain medication, including certain kinds of antibiotics, heart and blood pressure medicines, antihistamines and antidepressants. Consult your physician or pharmacist regarding photosensitization related to any prescription medications.
I WAS FINE WHEN I LEFT THE BEACH, SO WHY AM I
The redness associated with sunburns can take up to 24 hours to show. If you are outside and your skin begins to turn red, get out of the sun. You may already have a sunburn. SPF ratings are determined in a laboratory setting. SPF-50 products are estimated to allow 1/50 of the sun’s burning rays to get through to the skin (protects against approximately 98% of the sun’s burning rays). SPF-100 products are estimated to allow 1/100 of the sun’s burning rays to get through to the skin (protects against approximately 99% of the sun’s burning rays). Actual protection may vary and will depend on the user applying adequate amounts. Reapply at least every 2 hours or as directed on the package to help ensure adequate protection.

REVISED FDA STANDARDS FOR SUNSCREEN
Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced revised rules for labeling and testing sunscreen products to help consumers make more informed choices.
HOW DID THIS CHANGE AFFECT YOUR FAVORITE PRODUCTS?
These important changes didn’t affect what’s inside our bottle, so keep enjoying safe and effective Banana Boat® sunscreens with confidence. You may have started seeing our labeling changes on products starting in December 2012, as required by the FDA.
UNDERSTANDING THE CHANGES
BROAD SPECTRUM PROTECTION
The FDA provided testing requirements for sunscreen products to show the amount of protection against both UVA (the rays responsible for aging) and UVB (the rays responsible for burning). Products that pass this test will be labeled “Broad Spectrum”.
NEW CLAIM RESTRICTIONS
Sun care products can no longer claim to be “waterproof,” “sweat proof”, or be a “sunblock”. They can claim “water resistant”, but will need to state the length of water resistance (i.e. Water Resistant 40 min or Water Resistant 80 min).
DRUG FACTS BOX
All sunscreen products must now include drug facts on their container. Banana Boat® products already include a drug facts box. Banana Boat® products already comply with many of these guidelines, so there will not be significant changes to the labels.
